RETROSPECTIVE CATALOG

A full-color thirty-six page retrospective catalog published to accompany the
exhibition was made possible by the Towson University Art Department and the
Holtzman Art Gallery, in addition to 114 individual donors and several
organizations.
John Blair Mitchell: A Retrospective, written by Eric Miller, Ph.D.,
Professor Emeritus of the art department, art historian and painter, includes
eleven pages of text illustrated throughout by nineteen examples of Dr.
Mitchell's art. Forewards are written by the dean of Towson's College of Fine
Arts and Communications, the Holtzman Gallery director, and the Deputy
Director for Curatorial Affairs of the Baltimore Museum of Art. A four page
illustrated chronology plus individual listings of permanent collections,
solo exhibitions, and awards, are included. The front and back cover
illustrations show paintings which were done forty-five years apart.

"It's always interesting to see one's recent works as a totality-- a kind of sound bite, in this case, a sight-bite, of effort and direction. As you look at the work, you say to yourself, 'so this is where I've been going'."
-- John Blair Mitchell - In Print, Maryland Printmakers, "Exhibitions as Education", June 1992, Vol.3, #4
"The effects of labor should erase the appearance of labor."
-- James McNeil Whistler
